October 11, 1833 ---- November 21, 1912

M. K. MERRITT

Moses Kelsey Merritt was born in Vermont in October, 1833, died in Bellingham, Washington, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. E. Scott, November 21st, 1912. He spent some time in California in mining, going around Cape Horn with his father about 1850 and crossing the Isthmus of Panama on his return trip to Vermont. He came West to Iowa, visited Pike's Peak, returned to Grinnell and made it his home for many years. He married Emily Morrill, who died twelve years ago. They had three children, Mrs. E. E. Scott, of Bellingham, Washington, Miss Harriet Merritt, of Sunnyside, Washington, and Guy E. Merritt of Warwick, N.D., who survive him, as does Mrs. Mabel Maclanahan, of Paolo, Kansas, a niece of Mrs. Merritt, who was brought up in the family as a daughter. Since his wife's death he has made his home with his daughter, first in Eagle Grove, Iowa, then in Dakota, and in Washington, but his interests were all in Grinnell. He had seen its beginnings, its struggles and its successes. Grinnell was home and to it his body has been brought for burial [Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell] at his request.

He was a great reader, a charitable man, a genial companion, a true friend and neighbor greatly loved by those who knew him best. He would have liked to spend his last years in Grinnell among old friends but he has passed on to be with the many old friends and neighbors gone on before.
