January 29, 1843 --- March 29, 1930

Mrs. Bertha Thompson, daughter of Lars and Mary Larson, was born Jan. 29, 1842, Hadeland, Norway. She passed from this earthly life on March 29, 1930, at the age of 88 years and two months, after a short illness at the home of her son, Henry B. Thompson, where she has made her home for the past nine years. She was baptized and confirmed in the Grans Lutheran Church of Hadeland, Norway, and continued in that same faith. In 1866 she was united in marriage to Henry, also known as Hans Thompson. In the same year, they emigrated to the United States, residing at Chicago, Ill., Argyle, Wis. and Fort Dodge for a few years. In 1870 they located on a farm near Thor, where they lived until her husband's death in 1910. To this union nine children were born of whom seven are now living, namely; Thomas of Brandon, SD; Lewis of Wichita, KS; Mattie of Fort Dodge; Ed of Thor; Minnie, Clarion; Mrs. John Jotten; Olaus of Los Angeles, CA; and Henry of Eagle Grove. The children whom preceded her are Minnie who died in infancy and Martin, who died in 1922. She had two brothers and two sisters of whom only one brother, Iver Larson of Vienna, SD, is now living. She also leaves to mourn her passing, besides her children, 32 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many relatives and a host of friends.

Our departed sister was of a cheerful and happy disposition, and had a strong sense of justice and righteousness. She was gifted with an unusual memory and knew large portions of the Scripture as well as very many of our best hymns by heart. In church attendance and at the prayer meetings she was unusually faithful, occasionally taking part in prayer and even testimony, and very often she sang her verses in between the prayers. She will be greatly missed at our meetings. She confessed before she died that she rested on the foundation of Jesus Christ as her only refuge and savior, and have reason to hope that she was ready when death summoned her. May God richly bless the bereaved friends. Funeral services were held from West Side Lutheran Church, Tuesday, April 2. P. Ljostveit was in charge. Interment was at Norway-Lake cemetery near Thor.
