11 March 1814 --- 9 June 1892

John Boynton died at the residence of his son-in-law, J. W. Shinkle, near Webster City, Iowa on the 9th of June, 1892, aged 78 years and nearly three months. Born in Orleans county, Vermont on the 11th of March, 1814, he came to Stephenson county when a young man, and in 1848 received from James K. Polk the certificate of preemption of the homestead which still stands in his name in Waddams township. In 1848 he was married to Miss Almeda Alexander, of Winslow, who died in 1875. Of his four children Mrs. L. P. Christenson resides in Webster City and Mrs. J. W. Shinkle near Webster City, and Joseph A. near Clarion, Iowa, Henry B. near Adams, Nebraska. While yet a youth Mr. Boynton united with the M.E. church which he ever after strove to honor by his service and support. About sixteen months before his death he suffered the fracture of his hip joint by a fall which rendered him somewhat of a cripple, and perhaps hastened his end. His fatal disease -- progressive paralysis -- allowed no farewells either by word or sign, but we know that as a tree standeth so shall it fall. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Terryll, of Clarion, from these words, "Then cometh the end."
