December 26, 1869 --- April 17, 1950

Jessie Heckart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Heckart, was born at Algona, Iowa, December 26, 1869. She spent her girlhood there, attending Algona public schools and the Congregational church and Sunday school. When a young woman she came to Eagle Grove and assisted her father in the grocery business. She was united in marriage to James Rudy in July of 1895. To this union one daughter, Evelyn, was born. She was a member of the Eagle Grove Congregational church and was a charter member of the Eagle Grove Chapter No. 114, Order of the Eastern Star. She was at one time a member of the Equality Club and of the Woman's Club. She was very active in the affairs of the Eagle Grove community.

Mr. Rudy died in May 1919. For ten years Mrs. Rudy continued to live in Eagle Grove and then moved to Sioux City to be with her daughter who taught in the Sioux City schools for many years. Her daughter, Evelyn, died in June of 1943. Mrs. Rudy continued to live in Sioux City until the time of her death on Monday, April 17, 1950, at the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 21 days. Besides her husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by one brother, Grant Heckart. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Schaffter, and two nieces Dorothy and Camilla Schaffter, all three living in Washington, D. C. and by friends in Eagle Grove, Sioux City and elsewhere.

Mrs. Rudy was a woman of great kindness of heart, strong personality and was devotedly attached to her daughter, home and friends. She loved little children and in her whole life was their friend. She was always concerned for the welfare of others and took the greatest delight in aiding and benefitting anyone in trouble. No person ever asked aid in vain from her and in her entire life no hungry person was ever turned away from her door. She was ever ready to see beyond the faults of others and her mind always ran to the good and noble that was in any person spoken of. The poem, "By the Side of the Road," expresses beautifully her philosophy of life.
