Funeral services for William Henry Wolter Sr., 89, will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at the Liberty Township Cemetery in Calumet. with a reception following at Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet.

Bill died of natural causes at the age of 89 on May 5 at his home in Sun City, California. He was born in Calumet on Feb. 27, 1925 to Fred and Nora (Kluender) Wolter. He attended school in Calumet and graduated from Liberty Township Independent School Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Laura Lee Martin on Aug. 26, 1947. They were blessed with eight children. He attended Buena Vista in Storm Lake, and in 1949, he earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in mathematics and physical education. He served as principal and superintendent in many schools throughout Iowa -- Hansel, Corwith-Wesley, Lansing, and Belmond. In 1964, the family moved to Hemet, California, where he taught mathematics and coached at Hemet High School until 1979. In 1979, he moved to Turlock, California, where he taught mathematics at Turlock High School and retired in 1985. Bill and Laura retired to Minnesota, Arizona and finally California. He loved sharing stories about his life, was an avid reader and until the last few years, was active and played golf daily. He truly was a remarkable man -- strong, loyal and kind

He is survived by his children: William Wolter, Jr. (Lillyann) of Hemet, California; Daniel Wolter (Kathy) of Redding, California; Lee Anne Cripe (David) of Hemet, California; Jeanne Miranda (Roberto Neri) of Menifee, California; Tina Wolter (Jay Jones) of Avery, California; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Phyllis (Wolter) Mehrens of Leander, Texas; and his close cousin Don (Marilyn) Dupley of Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Laura Lee on May 23, 2010 and his children; Dal, Kathleen and Lisa.
