Funeral Services Held For Mrs. John Holck

Funeral services for Mrs. John Holck, pioneer resident of this community, were held from the home north of Jeffers on Sunday afternoon, January 14, at two o'clock and from the Jeffers Methodist church at two thirty o'clock. The Rev. P. E. Shannon, pastor, was in charge. The casket bearers were A. W. Noble, S. H. Christ, George Wolf, Henry Meier, Dr. F. W. Therkelsen and Oliver Flaig. Interment was in the Jeffers cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Holck were among the older settlers who cleared their own land and constructed buildings on their farm where they lived and raised their family. And on down through the years they assisted with the progress in their community, and after the death of her husband, she continued to carry on these established traditions. Her association among neighbors and friends was one of her contributions to the enjoyment of life. She was a good mother and a fine woman.

Emma Josephine Henrietta Tanck, daughter of John and Christine Tanck, was born October 1, 1868 at Davenport, Iowa and passed away on January 10, 1945 at the age of 76 years. All of her family, except herself, were born in the province of Schlesvig, then a part of Denmark, later Germany, where her father was a gardener and dairyman. In 1861 they came to this country in a sailboat. In 1881 the family moved to Renwick, Iowa.

She was baptized on November 6, 1868 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith but when the family moved to Minnesota they affiliated with the Methodist church. On December 20, 1891 at Renwick, Iowa, she was united in marriage to John Holck. To this union ten children were born. In 1905 they moved to Minnesota, to what is now known as the Ed Noble farm. After living there for eight years, they bought and built the home where she lived until the time of her death.

During the First World War, she spent much time doing Red Cross work, but most of her time was devoted to her home and her family. Although she did not go out much she enjoyed many friends and relatives who were often entertained there.

She enjoyed good health until the past summer when she found it necessary to submit to an operation. Six weeks ago she re-entered the hospital for another operation. Three weeks ago she was removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martin Giese at Mountain Lake. Complications set in and in spite of constant care given her by two of her daughters, Mrs. Giese and Mrs. Nelson, she passed to her reward on the morning of January 10 at 8:30 o'clock.

She is survived by four sons, five daughters, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The children are: Arthur, of Windom; William, Clara, Agnes, Carl and Leo of Jeffers; Mrs. Bert Gilbertson (Lillian) of Lucas; Mrs. Martin Giese (Ada) of Mountain Lake; and Mrs. Warren Nelson (Hazel) of Thornton, Iowa. Her husband, John, passed away in 1932 and one daughter, Meta, died in infancy. One sister, Mrs. Ferdinand Nebendahl, and one brother, John Henry Tanck, also preceded her in death, as did one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carl Holck, and one grandson, Norman Gilbertson....
