Carl F. Steig, 81, of Fort Dodge, died Sunday, October 5, 2014, at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer. A service honoring Carl's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, at the Tompkins Celebration Center of Friendship Haven with the Rev. Mike Willer officiating. Military honors will be presented by the United States Navy Honor Guard. The visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Tompkins Celebration Center. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be made in Carl's name to Trinity United Methodist Church, Friendship Haven or the Cancer Center at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Carl is survived by his children, Debra Steig and her husband Scott Crandell, Kalispell, Mont.; Doug Steig and wife Kymbra, Lake Elsinore, Calif.; step-children, Candi Coutts Schickel, Robert Coutts, William Coutts, Christopher Coutts and 16 grandchildren. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sue, his son David and his brother Fred.

Carl Fredrick Steig, the son of Leonard and Mamie (Schulke) Steig, was born January 13, 1933, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Carl lived in Storm Lake for the first 15 years of his life. The family moved briefly to Blue Earth, Minnesota and then moved to Eagle Grove where he graduated from high school in 1951. Carl served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 and was a veteran of the Korean War. Carl married Shirley Bernard in 1957 in Eagle Grove and they had three children: Debra, David and Douglas. They later divorced. Carl attended Eagle Grove Community College and graduated from Iowa State University in 1961 with a B.A. degree in Industrial Education. Carl was an industrial arts teacher for 23 years for the Pomeroy, Stanhope, Jewel and Boone Community Schools. He built his own home in Boone and worked with various industries. On January 8, 1984, Carl was united in marriage to Sue Coutts in Fort Dodge. He set up his carpenter shop in the garage of their home.

Carl loved creating beautiful things out of wood. Each of his loved ones has a wooden work of art made by Carl's hands. He was a craftsman in custom made furniture and intricate inlaid bowls. Carl also loved nature, fishing and playing bridge and had recently become a Life Master in Duplicate Bridge. Carl had incredible patience in his work and with people. Words that best describe him include 'kind, caring, patient, honest and hard worker.' A recent highlight in his life was taking an honor flight to Washington DC. Carl was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a life member of the V.F.W.
