Funeral service for Leonard P. Vrieze, 63, of rural Thompson was held Tuesday morning at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Pastors Philip and Marilyn Peters officiated with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The son of Harm and Jennie (Luppen) Vrieze, Leonard Peter Vrieze was born February 27, 1936, on a farm near Kanawha. He grew up in the Kanawha and Thompson area and attended school in Thompson. He worked at Wilsons Foods in Albert Lea, Minn., then drove truck for TS Express in Northwood until he retired in 1995. On February 14, 1956, he was married to Kathryn Mattoon in Britt. He died November 12, 1999, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn of Thompson; two daughters, Debbie Chisholm and her husband Mike of Osage and Peggy Adams and her husband Craig of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sons, Danny Vrieze and his wife Barbara of Phoenix, Ariz., and Randy Vrieze and his wife Sherry of Thompson; 10 grandchildren: Crystal, Fallon, Josh, Michael, Jerrod, Nichole, Jenna, Spencer, McKenzie and Brianna; two brothers, Duane Vrieze and his wife Evelyn of Forest City and Larry Vrieze and his wife LaVonne of Kiester, Minn.; one sister, Darlene Wentworth and her husband Douglas of Forest City; his mother-in-law, Sarah Mattoon of Britt; along with several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins both here and in Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Jerry Nickson; one sister-in-law, Nancy Slobe; and his father-in-law, Lester Mattoon.
