Mildred Loraine Nelson Meyer, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Spring Meadows Senior Community in Holland, OH.
Mildred was born on a farm, in Belmond, Iowa, to Nickoli and Amelia (Oscarson) Nelson on April 20, 1921. She attended and graduated from Belmond High School, Waldorf College (Iowa), Concordia College (Minnesota), and the University of Toledo (Ohio). She received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She moved to Toledo, OH, in 1943, to take a job as a parish worker at St. Petri Lutheran Church, where she met her husband, Alfred D. Meyer. They married in 1944. For 12 years, Mildred and Alfred owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store on Perth St. in Toledo, called Meyer's Market. She would go on to become an elementary school teacher for Toledo Public, teaching at Reynolds Corners, Glenwood, Fall Meyer, and Central Ave. School in Sylvania. She officially retired in 1985, but continued to substitute teach for another 4 years. When she was in her eighties, she tutored children in reading and writing.
She was active in the community, as well. She was a member of Alpha Delta Gamma Psi, chapter 12 and served as president for two years. She was made an Honorary Charter Member in 2008. She was very active at Epiphany Lutheran Church where she led Bible Studies, served with the Women of the Church and Altar Guild, made quilts with the Epiphany Quilters, that went to refugees overseas, and - of course - taught Sunday school. Even in her nineties, she continued to lead Bible Study Groups and hymn sings, by playing the piano, at the assisted living where she lived and, later, at the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all seven of her brothers and sisters. Mildred was so proud of and is survived by her granddaughters, Jade (Juhasz) McIntosh and Kayla (Juhasz) Wright and their husbands, the Adams, who she loved like grandchildren. Her great-granddaughters, Ashley Juhasz and Ivy Wright, and her great-grandson, Matthew McIntosh, lit up her days and never failed to bring a smile to her face. She is also survived by countless friends, relatives, and students.
Mildred was a teacher in the truest, purest sense of the word and never really stopped teaching, throughout her life. Mildred lived her life in service to God and to others and she is much loved and will be greatly missed. Even in death, she is still teaching us how to live by her powerful example.
The visitation will be held on Monday, September 22, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 N. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 915 N. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH.
It was Mildred's expressed wish that no one send flowers. If you would like to do something, in her memory, please make a donation to Epiphany Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or a charitable organization of your choice. If you cannot afford a monetary donation, perform an act of service. It doesn't cost anything to simply help someone. The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Meadows Senior Community and to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for making Mildred comfortable and for all the compassionate support.
