Lynn B. Howell, Denver, Colo., formerly of Eagle Grove, died August 16, 2014, at the age of 82. He was born in 1932 and graduated with the Class of 1950 from Eagle Grove High School.

Lynn Baird Howell was born on September 17, 1932, in Churdan, Iowa, to Lonnie and Vera (McDonald) Howell. He passed away on August 16, 2014, at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colo. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1950 and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1958. While at Coe College, he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, started at first base on the baseball team and started at quarterback on the football team. He also served in the United States Army. He tried out for the St. Louis Browns professional baseball organization. Upon graduation from Coe College, Lynn began his sports career working for Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders. He found his passion in sports reporting and writing, working for the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the Colorado Springs Sun, the Rocky Mountain News where he was a beat writer for the Denver Rockets of the American Basketball Association (known as the ABA), ending his career at the Denver Post as a sports copy desk editor. Lynn owned and raced greyhounds and was an avid golfer.Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Vera McDonald Howell, brothers Lonnie, Jr., Robert, Jack, and his “second set of parents” Dr. Elmer and Mary Louise Smith. He is survived by his long-time partner, Dan Riley, of Denver; brother and sister-in-law Donald “Dixie” and Phyllis Howell of Corona, Calif., sister-in-law, Esther Howell of Eagle Grove, sister-in-law, Carol Howell of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his “second set of siblings” Dr. Robert Smith of East Lansing, Mich., Maggie Smith of Jamestown, Calif., and Jim Smith of Des Moines, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. No memorial service is planned. Donations may be made to: 1) Lynn B.
