Louie Pals, age 89, of Marshalltown and formerly of Meservey passed away Saturday August 9, 2014 at the Old Soldiers Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services for Louie Pals will be held Tuesday August 12, 2014 at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. Pastor David DeKuiper will officiate. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation for Louis Pals will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. Monday August 11, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home,111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Louie was born to Hilko and Tillie (Blau) Pals on November 25, 1924 on a farm outside of Meservey. Louie grew up on the farm and went to country school. Louie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. Louie entered the service at the end of World War II, and was stationed in Germany. After his tour of duty Louie returned to Belmond and opened the skating rink called the Rollaway and also worked for Fred and Phyllis Pals at the grocery store. Louie married Ruth Brayman and to this union two sons were born Vance and Todd. They moved to Marshalltown in the early 1960’s. Louie worked at Fareway a short time, then at Fisher’s manufacturing. Louie and Ruth later divorced.
Louie retired in 1983. Louie loved to sit in his chair and watch the “world go by”. He loved to give candy to all neighborhood children. Louie was a friend to everyone. He had visitors at his home frequently. Louie always wanted to help others. Louie enjoyed feeding the bird and squirrels outside. Louie entered the Old Soldiers Home in Marshalltown in May 2012 and resided there until his death.
Louie is survived by his two sons Vance of Boone, Iowa and Todd (Reyna) of Salisbury, North Carolina, eight grandchildren, Sarah, Elizabeth, Heather, Valerie, Jose, Itzel, Bryan and Gerald, four great-grandchildren, Garret, Bethany, Lily and Weston, two sisters, Viola Barkema of Belmond, Iona Yost of Las Vegas, NV, one brother, Leslie Pals of Meservey and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Louie was preceded in death by his parents and twelve siblings.
