MRS. BAUER, AGE 86, DIES
Services for Widely Known Local Woman at Funeral Home
LIVED HERE 22 YEARS

Mrs. Fred Bauer, 86, a resident of Webster City for the past 22 years, died yesterday afternoon at her home 925 Division street, death being caused by ailments incident to old age. She had been in poor health for the past several weeks. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Foster funeral home. Dr. Ira J. Houston, of the Congregational church will officiate and burial will be made in Graceland cemetery. The Women's Relief corps and the Purity Rebekah lodge will attend the services.

Mrs. Bauer is survived by one granddaughter, Miss Agatha Bauer, and one grandson, Lenwood M. Bauer, both of Grass Valley, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Fred Bauer, who was a veteran of the Civil War, died April 8, 1930, and her son, Charles H. Bauer, died August, 1929. Four children, Minnie Mary, Frederick John, Katie E., and Albert, died of diphtheria within 10 days in August 1880.

Miss Katherine Schweppe was born April 1, 1846, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schweppe. Her father was a farmer in Dane county, Wisconsin. She was married to Mr. Bauer July 3, 1865, at Merrimac, Wis. After the cessation of hostilities between the north and south Mr. Bauer returned to his home in Sauk county, Wis., and in 1865 he and Mrs. Bauer came to Iowa settling in Independence township, Hamilton county. Here they lived until the fall of 1880 when they suffered the loss of four children by diphtheria. This great bereavement caused them to rent their farm and with their remaining child Mr. and Mrs. Bauer returned to Wisconsin to visit. In 1881 they returned to Webster City, but after a few months took up their residence in Eagle Grove where Mr. Bauer was engaged in the shoe business for 29 years. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Bauer returned to Webster City which had since been their home. Mrs. Bauer had always been very active in affairs of the community and took an especial interest in the work of the relief corp and Purity Rebekah lodge. She was also a member of the Past Noble Grands and was a regular attendant at all of the meetings. She was also a member of the Congregational church. She never failed to contribute to the Kiddies Santa Claus clb and was always interested in working for the good of the community. She was a woman who made friends easily and who had many friends, both among the young and old of this city. Her granddaughter, Miss Agatha Bauer, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kathryn Bauer, are here from Grass Valley, Calif., to attend the funeral.
