Lois M. Hackbarth, age 98, of Dows passed away Tuesday June 10, 2014 at the Scenic Manor Nursing Facility in Iowa Falls. Funeral services for Lois M. Hackbarth will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday June 14, 2014 at the Morgan United Methodist Church east of Dows. Pastor Judy Eilders will officiate. Burial will take place in the Morgan United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation for Lois M. Hackbarth will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows.

Lois, the daughter Arba and Mary Etter Beall, was born August 8, 1915 in Cavour, SD. Lois grew up in South Dakota where she graduated from high school in 1933. Lois moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa where she went to John Fletcher Business College. She received her BA. She met Arlen Hackbarth while going to school. Lois returned to South Dakota where she taught country school. Lois married Arlen Hackbarth at the Yale Chapel on the East Coast before Arlen went to World War II. After returning from war they lived in Marshalltown, Iowa where they made their home and raised their family. They spent every summer in Dows, IA, where Arlen farmed his family’s land. They were blessed with three children. Lois was very creative; she loved doing crafts and she also did a lot of sewing. Lois made clothes and Halloween costumes. Lois also did some gardening.

Lois is survived by her three children Stan and (Mary Beth) Hackbarth of Iowa City, IA; Steve Hackbarth of Ackley, IA; and Arla (Boyd) Pickens of Littleton, CO. eight grandchildren Melissa (Blair) Payson, Chris (Heidi) Hackbarth, Lara (Ani) Shastry, Andrew Hackbarth, Emily Hackbarth, Jacque Hackbarth Kelley Pickens, Tom Pickens, five step-grandchildren, Adam, Natasha, Matthew, Jacob Sheyko, Kristine Erickson, three great-grandchildren Addison, Holland, Finn, and several step-great grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four sisters.
