August 18, 1957 --- June 5, 2014

John Douglas Lounsberry, 56, of Story City, passed away in his home on Thursday, June 5, 2014, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, Lorijo (Helland) Lounsberry and his three children, Brian, Kevin and Lynn. John was the son of Max and Winnifred (Barrett) Lounsberry of Zearing. He graduated from NESCO High School in 1975. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. John married his high school sweetheart, Lorijo, on June 7, 1980. They moved to Webster City, where he worked with an accounting firm in Eagle Grove. They then moved to Oelwein in January 1985. He worked at Maynard Cooperative for 12 years. They returned to Story County in August 1998.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lorijo; his children, Brian, Kevin and Lynn; his mother, Winnie Lounsberry; his brother, Tom (Denise) Lounsberry, and their two children, Nicholas and Andrew. He is also survived by his sister-in law, Ann (Greg) Ruble, their son, Nathan (Holly) and their two children, Georgia and Rider; his brother-in-law Kurt Helland (girlfriend, Jody Horning). He was preceded in death by his stillborn son, Jay Douglas, on Feb. 24, 1986, and his father, Max, on Jan. 23, 1998.

John worked at Oakland Cooperation for the past 17 years. He loved working with his dear friends and his boss (brother in Christ) Roger Oakland. He also enjoyed a part-time job at Casey’s, which allowed him to tell story after story of memorable people he encountered. John thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing and watching sports. He was a die-hard Hawkeye fan and, most recently, Iowa Wild Hockey. If you asked him a sports question, he could answer it! He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, and the funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Both services will be at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. Memorials may be made out to UMC Youth at Grace United Methodist Church. Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is assisting the family with arrangements.
