***************

Conductor A. L. Stuart, 70, died at his home on South Commercial Avenue last week Thursday morning. He was up and about that morning as usual and appeared in excellent health and spirits. He ate a hearty breakfast and commented on the fact that he was feeling so well. Later on the same morning he laid down on the lounge to read his paper and suddenly collapsed and when the family physician arrived he found that Mr. Stuart had been summoned to the great beyond. Mr. Stuart was very well known by the traveling public when the railroads were in general use. His genial, obliging and kindly way of discharging his duties endeared him to the railway company as well as to the patrons of the road. He was a citizen whose honesty and integrity were never questioned. As honest as the moral law himself, he was charitable toward those who were not. He was a man of undoubted and proven courage. Very few men would have lived through the serious accident which befell him at Webster City six years ago when he lost a leg and part of a foot when he fell from the top of a box car and was run over. But he did not want to leave those endeared to him in this world and by sheer force of will staged a remarkable recovery. The following history of his life was prepared and read at the funeral service:

Andrew Law Stuart was born in Iowa county, Wisconsin, August 1, 1862, and died at his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Thursday morning November 17, 1932, at the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 16 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents when about five years of age and settled at Traer where he received his education in the public schools and in the Academy of Traer. He was one of the earliest residents of Eagle Grove, coming here in 1885 to enter the employ of the Northwestern Railroad Company.

He was united in marriage with Miss Edith Snider of Warren, Ill., in 1888. They immediately established their home in Eagle Grove, where they have since resided. To them were born two daughters, Grace, who is now Mrs. James D. Renne of Omaha, Nebr., and Hazel, who is now Mrs. Lyle Mantor of Kearney, Nebr.

Mr. Stuart was actively employed by the Northwestern Railroad Co. from 1885 until he was incapacitated for service in a railroad accident in April, 1926. Since that time he has been an interested and devoted member of the Methodist church in Eagle Grove. He was an honored member of the Official Board, holding the office of District Steward. His counsel was sought in all matters of importance to the church. He found great delight in the discussions of the Men's Bible class of the Sunday school and always took an active part in them. He was made a member of Bower Lodge #464 AF & AM on November 26, 1899. He was also a member of Medina Council #26.

Besides his wife and two daughters he is survived by his sister, Mrs. James Logan, of Eagle Grove, the only surviving member of a family of eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. John Stuart. He is also survived by two grandsons, James Stuart Renne, and Lyle Andrew Renne of Omaha.

During the long years of service on the railroad Mr. Stuart had made for himself a host of friends among the employees and patrons of the company. There will be genuine sorrow among this circle of acquaintances. The lodge, the Church, and the community have lost a true brother, a faithful friend, and an honored citizen.
