One Car Accident near Thor Saturday night killed woman

A rural Eagle Grove woman, Mrs. Arthur J. Smith, was Humboldt County's sixth auto fatality for 1965. The 40-year old woman was killed when the late model pickup she was driving left the road and crashed into a ditch three miles east of Thor Saturday night about 7 p.m. Investigating were Humboldt County Sheriff Marvin Anderson, Deputy Mervyn Johnson, and Highway Patrolmen Jerry Michael of Humboldt and William James of Belmond. The accident occurred about three miles north of the home of the woman and according to authorities, Mrs. Smith was enroute to Goldfield to attend a wedding. The pickup she was driving went into the left hand ditch, came back on the road and slammed into the ditch on the right side. It did not overturn. Authorities said there were no skid marks at the site although the right turn light was on. Mrs. Smith was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge where she was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy was performed by the pathologist at Mercy Hospital who said death was due to a crushed chest, severe chest hemorrhages and a broken neck.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Grove Methodist Church. Rev. Bernard Olson officiated with the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home in charge. Born at Omaha, Neb the former Gayle Frances Smith was reared and educated at Mason City where she graduated from high school. She was employed by the United Dairy Association and Northwestern Portland Cement Company in Mason City until she married Arthur J. Smith there in 1953. Since that time, the couple had lived on a farm near Eagle Grove. She was a member of the Garden Club, Eastern Star and Methodist Church. Survivors are her husband; a son, Allen Dean, 10, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Smith of Manly.
