July 3, 1905 ---- December 19, 1996

Lillian M. Johnston, 91, of Montezuma, died Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 23 at Watts Funeral Home. Officiating was Rev. Brian Carter. Organist was Mrs. Sally Johnston and soloist was Mrs. Rhonda Minner. Music selections were "Mansion Over The Hilltop," and "Just a Closer Walk." The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art." Casket bearers were Randy Hall, Jeff Hall, Brian White, Mike Rekemeyer, Dave Hall, Doug Johnston, Kurt Johnston and James Owens. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.

Lillian was born July 3, 1905 near Searsboro, the daughter of Charles W. and Anne (Farmer) Johnson. She graduated from high school at Corwith, Iowa, in 1922 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She then taught school for eleven years in Poweshiek County. On March 24, 1934, she was united in marriage with Dale Johnston at Marshalltown. To this union three children were born. They farmed east of Montezuma until retiring and moving into Montezuma in 1966. Dale died October 18, 1984. Shortly thereafter Lillian moved to Sunnyview Apartments, where she lived until becoming a resident of the nursing home in February 1996.

She was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, Dorcus Sunday School Class and UMW. She was also a member of the Willing Workers Club. Lillian loved flowers and being outdoors. She especially enjoyed her family and being with people. She was active at the Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; and two brothers, Delano Johnson and a brother who died in infancy. Lillian is survived by two sons and one daughter and their spouses, Carol and Dean Hall of Montezuma; Howard and Jacque Johnston of Montezuma; and Ronald and Jean Johnston of Grinnell; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Kermit Johnson and his wife, Martha of Carlisle; and other relatives and many friends. Memorials can be made to the United Methodist church.
