Born on April 7, 1921, in Hampton, Iowa, Henry was the son of Eleanor and Henry Charles Cahill, Sr. After graduation from Hampton High School in 1939, Hank served as a telegrapher and agent for the CNW and the M & St. L Railroads. He worked in many towns, including Hampton, Latimer, Mason City, Sheffield, and Belmond before he moved to Marshalltown in 1967. Miraculously, Henry survived the Belmond Tornado in 1966 which nearly took his life. After 45 years with the railroad, Henry retired in September of 1986.

Henry was united in marriage to Dorothy M. DeRock in 1950 in Rockwell, Iowa. Henry and Dorothy raised their family of 5 children in Hampton before moving to Marshalltown. The couple enjoyed golfing and dancing and spent 24 winters as "snowbirds" in Surprise, Arizona.

Organizations to which Hank previously belonged were the Knights of Columbus, Lions, ORT and BRAC Unions, and several country clubs. Hank was a member of the American Legion Golf Course where he loved to play golf 5 times a week with his buddies. He was also a member of St. Henry's Church.

Left to cherish his memory are Dorothy, his wife of 63 years, his daughter Connie (Kevin) Mogard, his sons Jeff (Sue) Cahill, Denny (Peggy) Cahill, and Pat (Rose) Cahill. Henry had 6 grandchildren: Jill (Andy Paullus), Mike (Emily) Mogard, Colin Cahill, Tad (Jen) Cahill, Megan Cahill, and Beau Cahill. In addition, Henry will be remembered as "Crazy Grandpa" by his 8 great-grandchildren: Miah, Jaimon, Calla and Zion Mogard, Jaida and Trace Paullus and Jackson and Tyler Cahill. In death, he rejoins his son Charles Kelly, his parents, and 5 brothers and sisters.
