Helen Louise Pybus Jordan, 93, a longtime resident of the Wenatchee area, went home to be with her Lord, Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2001, from the Highline Convalescent Center in East Wenatchee. She was born Helen Louise Pybus to E.T. (Elias Thomas) and Nellie Marie (Tucker) Pybus on Nov. 15, 1908 in Yakima and when an infant, the family moved to Wenatchee, where her father established a blacksmith shop, which later became E.T. Pybus Company. She grew up and received her education in Wenatchee and following graduation from Wenatchee High School, she attended Willamette College and later the Bellingham Normal School, where she received her teachers certificate.
On Nov. 8 1941, she married Clem S. Jordan at Coeur d'Alene, ID. They made their home in Wenatchee, where Helen taught at Columbia and later Grant Elementary School. In 1972, she moved to Bellevue and volunteered at the Cancer Ward at the Virginia Mason Hospital. In 1989, she returned to Wenatchee. Helen loved teaching reading and loved children--she tutored many youngsters in reading. She loved people and was one to champion the underdog. She loved to reach out to other people and she was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf and was active for many years in the PTA and the Children's Orthopedic Guild. Helen attended the Central Christian Church in Wenatchee and was a past member of the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club and the Wenatchee First Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Marva and Tom McDevitt of Leavenworth, Betty Tucker and Art Stenberg of Newberg, OR and Mary Ann Jordan of Seattle; 10 grandchildren, Tatia Tucker Joyner, Melissa Tucker Malmedal, Nicole Tucker Riensche, Mara Tucker, Matthew, Jennifer, Todd and Jordan McDevitt, Autumn and David Jordan. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A family Graveside Service will be held Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2002 in the Peshastin Cemetery. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Helen L. Pybus Jordan will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the Jones & Jones Funeral Home in Wenatchee, with Pastor Walt Goehner, officiating. Memorials will be made to the Tonga Medical Mission; 111 Whitman St., #2A; Leavenworth, WA 98826. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
