Rev. Jerry Lee Newland, 74, formerly of 124 West 7th Street in Boone passed away at Madrid Home Communities in Madrid, Iowa on Monday afternoon, April 14, 2014 where he had resided since January of 2013. He was born on September 21, 1939 in Woodward, Iowa the son of Henry and Anna (Aulich) Newland. Jerry graduated from Boone High School and in 1960, from Boone Junior College. He continued his education in the ministry receiving his BA Degree in 1963 from Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, his BD Degree in 1966 and his MDIV in 1972 both from the Central Baptist Theology Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas. He interned at the Bethel Center in Kansas City, Kansas and served churches in the communities of Sioux City, Hampton, Wellman, Osage and Renwick, Iowa, from where he retired in 2008 before returning to Boone to make his home.
Jerry had a passion for music and enjoyed being outdoors where he could camp and fish. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Boone Rotary Club. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by 2 sisters; Joan Sigmund and husband LeRoy and Karen McCool and husband Gary all of Boone; 1 nephew; 6 nieces; and great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Jerry’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday morning, April 19th at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Boone with Rev. Jerry Bertelson officiating. A visitation will be held at the Church prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct their gift to the First Baptist Church for youth programs. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
