Tom Dunning Sr., age 79, of Alden, died on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls . Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday December 28, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Alden with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Thomas D. Dunning was born on October 20, 1934 to Frank and Leala Rankin Dunning at Iowa Falls Hospital. In the spring of 1935 Tom and his family moved to a farm northeast of Alden where he was raised. He attended country school till 7th grade and then attended Alden High School until he graduated in 1952. Tom attended Ellsworth College for 1 year and then went to work for the Alden Elevator for 7 years. On November 20, 1955 Tom married Dorothy Thompson at the Methodist Church in Popejoy, IA. Tom and Dorothy had three children; Debra Johnson (Keith) of Davenport, IA, Thomas A. Dunning (Jane) of Alden, IA, Diana Thies of Iowa Falls ,IA.

Tom and Dorothy started farming in 1960, south of Alden. They continued to live on this farm until his death. Tom was a member of the Alden United Methodist church for 64 years. He was a member of the Mason's for 58 years and the Order of the Eastern Star. He served on the Church board, Alden Elevator board, Hilltop board, and Iowa Institute Board.

Tom is survived by his wife Dorothy, two daughters, one son, nine grandchildren,thirteen great-grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren, fourteen nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. He is also survived by Dorothy's siblings and their spouses who have stayed connected through the years. They are Norma and Vern Huebner, Bette and Mel Criffield, Sharon and Richard Moreland, and Don and Linda Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Leala Dunning, brother Robert Dunning, sister Doris Hemingway, mother- and father-in-law Kenneth and Grayce Thompson.
