June 11, 1868 --- February 26, 1940

Frank E. Comstock, retired North Western railway engineer and former long time resident of Hawarden, passed away shortly before 8 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Younie, at Manilla, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Comstock had spent most of the time since last November at the home of their daughter in Manilla. He had been ailing for some little time from heart trouble and had been under the care of a physician but had been able to be up and about the house as late as Sunday. Mrs. Younie looked in on him about 7 o'clock Monday morning and he seemed to be sleeping. Some time later his physician called on the telephone to inquire about him and then when Mrs. Younie investigated she found that he had expired. It was believed that his death was due to a blood clot. The remains were brought to Hawarden Wednesday morning and funeral services were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. Robert F. Chapler in charge. Music was provided by a quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Halloran, Mrs. M. O. Larson and Harry Slife, with Miss Willo-jean Niemeyer as accompanist. Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Frank E. Comstock was born at Parsons, Kan., June 11, 1868 and died at Manilla, Iowa, February 26, 1940, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 15 days. On May 11, 1893, he was united in marriage with Ida Moore at Laurens, Iowa. Prior to his marriage, in 1891, Mr. Comstock had entered the employ of the North Western Railway Company at Eagle Grove as a fireman, and in 1897 he was promoted to engineers. The Comstock family made their home in Eagle Grove until 1910 when they moved to Hawarden when he took over the job of running the switch engine in the Hawarden yards and continued at this work until his retirement from railway service on July 31, 1937, after 46 years in the service. In 1918, however, the family moved back to Eagle Grove where he took over a switch engine job, but returned to Hawarden again after about a year. Following his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Comstock went to California where they spent about two years, retuning to Iowa last fall. He had visited in Hawarden once or twice since returning from California.

Besides the widow, he is survived by three sons, Leo of Hawarden, Edwin of Sioux City, and Ted of Los Angeles, Calif., and three daughters, Mrs. H. J. Osterday of Dell Rapids, S.D., Mrs. C. L. Younie of Manilla, Iowa, and Mrs. M. E. Harris of Los Angeles, Calif. He is also survived by two brothers, A. L. Comstock of New York and Roy Comstock of Eagle Grove, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank DeWitt of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. E. F. Allard of Chicago. There are also 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One of his brothers and a sister came to Manilla to visit him Monday only to find that he had passed away before their arrival. Mr. Comstock was highly regarded by many old Hawarden friends and news of his death came as a distinct shock to Hawarden people.
