Gertrude V. Peyton, age 94, of Dows, passed away Thursday March 13, 2014 Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion. Funeral services for Gertrude Peyton will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday March 17, 2014 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. Pastor Shawn Hill will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery at a later date. Visitation for Gertrude Peyton will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Sunday March 16, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Gertrude Vivian Peyton, the daughter of Herman and Marie Sendenfelder Braun, was born on December 6, 1919 near Alexander, Iowa. She attended and graduated from the Alexander High School. Gertrude was united in marriage to Harold Ellis. The couple moved to San Diego, California, when Harold entered the service during World War II. Harold died in the South Pacific during the war. Gertrude then moved back to Iowa. met and married Max Dean Peyton. The couple made their home in Hampton and Dows. Gertrude was living at Dows at the time of her death. Gertrude worked for Tofte Sand/Gravel as the executive secretary and office manager. The majority of her working life, Gertrude worked for Tofte, until the company closed. Gertrude then worked for several different offices in the area. Gertrude worked for a publisher in Alden until she retired at the age of 62. Gertrude was an avid bowler. Her bowling team did hold various state tournament appearances as well as a state championship. She enjoyed quilting and reading. Gertrude was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Dows, where she was active in the women’s group.

Gertrude is survived by her son: Steven Wayne (Cheryl) Ellis of Clarion, three grandchildren, Joel (Pam) Ellis of Goldfield, Jeffrey Ellis of Kanawha, and Jonathan Ellis of Clarion, two great-grandchildren Joey and Jordan of Goldfield, two brothers and numerous other family and friends. Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harold, second husband, Max Dean, two sons, Terry, in infancy, Rick, and three sisters.
