Urbandale, IA -- Virginia Mae Berkeland, 90, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Urbandale Health Care Center in Urbandale. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Norway Township Cemetery near Kanawha, Iowa. Virginia was born on March 23, 1923, in Palo Alto County, Iowa, to Bertel and Blanche (Olson) Berkeland. She worked as a Registered Nurse, finishing her career in Washington State. She lived in the Des Moines area since 1998. She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church and the Daughters of Norway. Virginia is survived by her brother, Harold (Marian) Berkeland of CA; two sisters-in-laws, Jeanne Berkeland of MN and Eileen Berkeland of WA; her brother-in-law, Oliver Kienholtz of WA; many nieces and nephews and their families. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Irene Franson, Robert Berkeland, Doris Kienholtz, Marvyn Berkeland and Iola Kalvig.
