Caroline Dorothy Opheim was born on June 24, 1879, at Thor, Iowa, to parents Arne and Christiana (Lund) Opheim. She was baptized by Rev. Sauer and confirmed by Rev. Farseth in the Ullensvang Lutheran Church at Thor, Iowa. On June 7, 1899, she was united in marriage to Mr. Carl Berg of Thor. To this union ten children were born, all living except Joella, who died July 12, 1937, age 25 years. In the spring of 1911, Mrs. Berg came with her husband and children to the Clarkfield, Minnesota community, settling on the farm in west Friendship Township, where she was now residing with her son, Harold.
On December 14, she became very ill and was taken to the Clarkfield Hospital and passed away December 20, 1953, at the age of 74 years, six months and 26 days. Preceding her in death were her husband who died July 10, 1947, her daughter Joella, her parents, five brothers, two sisters and four grandchildren. She leaves to mourn her five sons: Arne, Wilhelm, Arthur and Harold of Clarkfield, Clarence of Willmar, Minnesota, and one foster son, Alfred Hagren who made his home with the Berg family for many years; four daughters: Mamie (Mrs. Robert Benson), Christine (Mrs. Arthur Benson), Judith (Mrs. Lewis Rysdahl) and Clara (Mrs. John Severson); 34 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers: Arnt Opheim of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Selmer Opheim of Waukon, Iowa, and Jens Opheim of Clarkfield; one sister, Mrs. Andrew Torkelson of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; besides a host of relatives and friends.
She had been a member of the Clarkfield congregation for over forty years. She belonged to the Tyro ladies aid for a number of years, after which she joined the Friendship ladies aid of which she was a member until her death. She was very interested in church work and in Missions. She was a loving Christian mother, cherished by her children and grandchildren and all who knew her.
