LuVerne H. Lemke, 89, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in South Beloit, Illinois, with his three children at his side. He was born on November 23, 1924, in Dows, Iowa, to Arthur and Clara (Venner) Lemke. He attended school in Dows until the 9th grade. He served his country in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946, in the Italian Campaign US Infantry as a Machine Gunner. In June of 1950, he married Betty Jean Summerhays and had 3 children. In June 1962, he married Dorothy Manning, who had one son from a previous marriage. LuVerne was employed by the city of Waterloo for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He was a hard worker, but enjoyed fishing trips, camping, gardening and loved to dance. Every June he made the trip to Minnesota to fish and visit with family. He visited family on Memorial Day weekends and Labor Day weekends in Roscoe, Illinois. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. LuVerne's all time wish came true when his son, LuVerne Jr, took him to Washington DC in October of 2004. He was able to see the new WWII memorial. His later years were enjoyed spending time, sitting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who loved hearing about his time in the service and his younger years on the farm. He is survived by his two brothers, Alvin Lemke of Alden, Iowa and Duane Lemke of Tama, Iowa; two daughters, Penny (Gene) Myers and Patricia (Conrad) Hahn; one son, LuVerne Lemke Jr; grandchildren, Sheri Westbrook, Sheila Myers, Steven (Nichole) Myers, Shelly (Curt) Sheffield, Bill McDevitt, David McDevitt, Chad (Katie) Hahn, Amanda (Dustin) Kamphuis; great grandchildren, Vanessa, Valery, Krystan, Cody, Curtis III, Sophia, Katy, Nick, Dylan, Kadence, Colby, Danielle, Sienna, Brittyn, Kinley. LuVerne was preceded in death by parents; one brother, Robert Lemke; his wife, Dorothy; a stepson, Stan; and a great grandson Brayden.
