Reuben Nelson, 89, Belmond, died November 28, 2013 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond surrounded by his family. Visitation is set for December 22 from 2-5 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for Monday, December 23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church west of Belmond.
Reuben, the son of Nikolai and Helen (Millie) Nelson, was born in Belmond on July 6, 1924. He attended and graduated from Belmond schools. Reuben assisted his parents in farming, and then attended Lutheran Bible Institute where he met his future wife, Eleonore Gudim (Ellie). They were married October 12, 1951 at Nokomis Heights Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. Reuben and Eleonore farmed in the Belmond area with their five children. After living in Northfield, MN for a short time, they returned to the Belmond area to farm. After retiring, Reuben liked working at various maintenance jobs in the Belmond area. Reuben enjoyed the simple things of life. He loved to farm, he loved his family, enjoyed his friends, and followed his faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Norris, Clifford and Everett; sisters Ruth Lonnevik and infant Pearl; son-in-law Dallas Backer; and two infant great grandchildren. Reuben is survived by his wife Ellie; Sonja Backer of Clear Lake, Mark (Cathy) of Belmond, Beth (Brian) Toftey of Belmond, Joel (Sue) of Delavan, WI, and Carol (Greg) Krasieski of Rye, CO; twelve grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
