R. R. Saatoff was born Jan. 23, 1854 Ostfriesland Germany. In 1872, he emigrated to America and settled near Ackley, Iowa. In 1891 he moved to Franklin Co. and finally located in Belmond. He was married in 1876 and nine children were born to the family union of whom two died in infancy. Those present at the funeral were: Jalla, Mrs. Marie Pauls, Rudolph, Mrs. Bena Kessler, Mrs. Alice Kessler, Minnie and Henry.
He united with the Reformed church while living in Franklin Co. and in the last years associated with the U. Ev. Church where he served as organist. His sickness was pronounced blood poison, and during this long illness everything possible was done to relieve and restore him again. Finally the silver cord was broken when he died Saturday July 8, at 5:10 p.m. He reached the age of 56 years 5 months and 18 days. He died in peace, prepared to meet his loved ones with Christ. The funeral service was held in the U. Ev. Church Monday afternoon 2 p.m. Rev. J. Koths conducted the service and Miss Blanche and Grace Shaffer led the song service. The pastor spoke on 2 Cor. 4:17. A large procession accompanied the remains to their last resting place.
