Alane Claudia Whittier
Claudia Whittier, 88, of Greeley, passed away at her home on October 3, 2013. She was born February 20, 1925 in Hawarden, IA, to Claude and Sylvia (Jensen) McVicker. She married Robert Betz on November 25, 1946. They divorced in 1971. She then married M.L. Whittier in the mid 70’s in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He passed September 10, 1990. Claudia met Floyd Larsen at a high school reunion; they became reacquainted and they spent 13 years together. He died in 2006.
She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1943. She lived in Igloo, SD; Beardeaux, France; Rio Grande City, TX; Sparta, NJ; Denver, CO; Tri Palms, CA; and moved to Greeley in 2010 to be nearer to family. Claudia worked for the Telephone Company in Denver, and then the Federal Center in Denver. She retired after a 25 year career as Executive Secretary with the Department of Defense. She played golf, bridge and enjoyed traveling with family but she truly loved painting and often took lessons and taught others to paint. She has given numerous scholarships to aspiring young artists. She was a founding member of the Spa City Paletteers in Desert Hot Springs, CA. She was a supporter of Seeing Eye Dogs for many years and Make A Wish Foundation. She lived life to the fullest.
Claudia is survived by her sister Myrtha Clark; nieces Judy (Terry) Kiefer and Kathi (Jerry) Lavelle; nephews, John Rogers, Visvacilla, CA, Skip (Mallka) Rogers, Marysville, WA and Robert Rogers, Carson City, NE; numerous grand nieces and nephews; goddaughter Michelle Farinella; and adopted granddaughter Naomi McCracken. She was preceded in death by her brother Don McVicker; sisters Florence Mitchell, Beth Rogers, Mary Brown and Mena Kay Pearson; her parents; and an uncle, Rev. Roy (Louise) McVicker.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., October 26, 2013 at the Bonell Chapel with a reception to follow in the Star Café. Inurnment will be in Eagle Grove, Iowa at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northern Colorado in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th Street, Greeley, CO 80631.
