SPIRIT LAKE - Paul E. Messerly, 65, of Spirit Lake, IA formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday October 10, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church with burial following at Colfax Township Cemetery, Vincent, IA. The visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Paul was born on July 16, 1948 and raised in Fort Dodge by his parents Lawrence and Marajane (Tracy) Messerly. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1969. He married Carol in 1978 in Fort Dodge. He worked as an over the road truck driver and then as an operator of heavy machinery. He was a very talented operator and enjoyed what he did. He was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed racing. He loved going boating and found a lot of peace while being out on the lake.

Paul is survived by his daughter Angie (Justin) Piper of Fort Dodge; his grandchildren Steven, Nathan, Gavin and Logan; his brother Phil Messerly of Forest City, IA and Mark (Nancy) Messerly of Tempe, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Marajane. Memorials may be left to the family for their further discretion.
