George J. Eckhoff, age 77, of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gary Frerichs, Clear Lake, Iowa, on Wednesday morning, January 20, 1988, from cancer. Funeral services were held at the Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg, Iowa, at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 1988. The Rev. Thomas J. Vos of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg and the Rev. Roger Huitink of the Wellsburg Reformed Church were the officiating clergymen. Special music was provided by the duet of Mrs. Lee Boomgarden and Richard Schafer. They sang two selections "Where the Roses Never Fade" and "The Old Rugged Cross." They were acompanied by Mrs. LuRay Neessen who also played the prelude and the postlude on the organ. Casket bearers were Myles Meyer, Irwin Abels, Delbert Lindaman, Donald Ross, John Ruter and Donald Anderson. Flower ladies were Mrs. Irwin Abels and Mrs. John Ruter. Ushers were Lawrence Lutterman and Donald Heikens. Car drivers were John Kruse, Steve Hook, Ernest DeNeui and Elwood Doyen. Burial was in the Shiloh Township Cemetery, Wellsburg, Iowa. The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
George J. Eckhoff was born on November 24, 1910, in rural Kanawha, Iowa, to John and Kathryn Beninga Eckhoff. He married Florence I. Ackerman on January 5, 1933, at Wellsburg, Iowa. To this union were born one daughter and one son. Florence died in 1981. On June 1, 1984, he married Fannie V. Kruse Anderson at Nashua, Iowa. He attended school in rural Kanawha, Iowa. He farmed for a couple years at Dike, Iowa. He and his wife, Florence, operated a restaurant in Wellsburg for a number of years. He was the town cop for a few years and was the Meadowbrook Golf Course greens superintendent for 19 years. He was a member of the Wellsburg Community Club. He was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg and was a Deacon in the Church.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie, his daughter, Mrs. Eunice E. (Gary) Frerichs of Clear Lake, Iowa, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Tillie Eekhoff, Britt, Iowa, and Mrs. Minnie (Leonard) Clarke, Whitten, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Florence, his son, Vernon, in 1982, a step-son, Roger Anderson, a sister, Ella Ruter, and a brother, Herman. A memorial fund has been established by the family.
