April 3, 1923 ---- October 4, 2013

EAGLE GROVE - Vernon Webster Newcomb, the son of Frank David and Lyda Ruth (Thomason) Newcomb, was born April 3, 1923, on the family farm across from Bach Grove. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1942. Vernon farmed his entire life. He started at the age of 8 driving a cultivator pulled by horses and ended pulling a field cultivator pulled by a 350 horse powered tractor. He actively farmed the family century farm until the fall of 2012, where he lived independently until 6 weeks prior to his death. Vernon was a humble man who spent his whole life working the land. In his lifetime he saw great changes in how farms were operated. Vernon was an avid collector of John Deere memorabilia, large and small. He was his happiest when he was driving one of his John Deere tractors.

Vernon was generous with family and friends. He spent many Friday nights taking friends out to dinner when they could no longer drive themselves. He was always there to help family members in need. Vernon was instrumental in helping his two nephews start their farming careers. He worked with David & Jon, teaching them everything he knew and passing on his love for working the land.

Vernon passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Survivors include his sister, Mary Rowen of Eagle Grove, nephews David Rowen (Linda) of Norwalk, Jon Rowen (Jan) of Eagle Grove and niece Becky Ramaeker (Tom) of Knoxville.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Mike Agnew officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the church in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
