SIOUX CENTER, Iowa --- Bernice Schoep, 97, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Carmel Reformed Church, rural Rock Valley, with the Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating. Burial will be in Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are with Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Bernice Schoep was born Nov. 1, 1915, in Kanawha, Iowa, to Neal and Emma (Bleeker) Grifhorst. When Bernice was 4, she moved with her family to Clear Lake, S.D., where she attended grade school. Her mother passed away from tuberculosis at age 36. Bernice was then cared for by her Grandmother Bleeker.
When Bernice was 16, she moved to Orange City, Iowa, with her father and two of her sisters. While in Orange City, Bernice did housework for various families until her marriage to William H. Schoep on June 18, 1937. Together they farmed near Carmel, Iowa, until 1973, when they moved to Sioux Center. Her husband Bill passed away in 1986.
Survivors include her four children, Emilene Kruid of Beresford, S.D., Marilyn (Gerrit) Van Holland of Rock Valley, Phyllis (Cornelius) Schelling of Woodland Park, Colo., and Bill (Mary) Schoep of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Korver of Lynden, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Louise Vander Schaaf of Texas; and half-sister, Phyllis Pierce of Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, after 48 years of marriage; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Schelling and Jacquelyn Schelling; great-grandson, Marcus Kruid; three sisters and their husbands, Marie and Henry Buyert, Helen and Carry Hofkamp, and Grace and Bert Buyert; and a brother-in-law, Simon Korver. The family prefers memorials to Carmel Reformed Church Memorial Fund, or the Bible League.
