August 19, 1932 ---- September 2, 2013

Belmond, IA — Loran “Sonny” Greenfield, age 81, passed away at home with his family on September 2, 2013, after a three- year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Belmond United Methodist Church, 1031 First St. SE, Belmond. The Reverend Cindy Morrison will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Belmond Military Unit. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m., at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. SE, Belmond, and continues one hour prior to the services at church Friday.

Loran Keith Greenfield was born August 19, 1932, in Belmond to Carl and Laura (Tomson) Greenfield. He was a 1950 graduate of Belmond High School and was a talented athlete, lettering in four sports throughout high school. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. His assignments included North Africa and Enid, Oklahoma.

While stationed in Enid, he met his future wife, Juanita Reim. They married on September 1, 1956, and had two children, Laurie and Terry. Loran worked for several seed corn companies, the Sheffield Elevator, Decker’s, Central Soya, and Eaton. He served as president of the local grain miller’s union for several years. Loran enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a longtime member of the Cyrene Lodge of the Masons.

He and Nita enjoyed their retirement years with family and friends. They made frequent trips to Minneapolis, Las Vegas and Oklahoma. In 2008, they took a special family trip to Alaska. A highlight of their retirement years was spending time with their grandson, Vaughan, and following his school activities and hockey games. Loran was a gifted story teller. He enjoyed visiting with people everywhere he went and always had a good joke to share.

Loran is survived by his wife of 57 years, Juanita “Nita”, Belmond; his son, Terry of Plymouth, Minn.; his daughter, Laurie (Jens) Ahrens of Maple Grove, Minn.; and his grandson Vaughan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, June Hawley and Jean Hageman; his nephews, Doug Hawley and Rick Hawley; and numerous family and friends. Loran loved Belmond. Memorials may be directed to the Belmond Historical Museum in his memory. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond.
