Gilbert N. Ellestad whose sudden and untimely death occurred Saturday, March 15, 1924, at a Des Moines hospital, following an operation, shocked the people of this community, and especially his relatives and many friends in the Crane Creek community where he was reared to manhood and where he was best known for his high standards and charming personality.
Gilbert N. Ellestad was born at the homestead in Jerico on Dec. 26, 1890. He was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter (Ellestad) Johnson, both of whom preceded him in death. His father died March 28, 1923, and his mother passed away on January 5, 1924. After completing his schooling in his home community, he attended Waldorf College at Forest City. He assisted his brother, Ed., in the store at Jerico for about a year and a half, when he accepted a position in a bank in 1914, in Renwick. Later he secured a position in the Humboldt State Bank. He entered the service July 25, 1918 at Camp Pike, Ark. Was company clerk and then entered Officers Training School. After his discharge Dec 2, 1918, he again became connected with a bank at Humboldt, Iowa.
He was married to Bessie Larson at Humboldt, Iowa, who together with a daughter, mourn the loss of a greatly devoted and most loving husband and father. His brothers and sisters are as follows: John, Edward, Peter, Grover, Sarah (wife of Martin Johnson), Martha (wife of Carl Offendahl), Anna and Hattie, all of whom are greatly bereaved as no brother was beloved more than this young man whose death came so suddenly.
Gilbert Ellestad honored his father and mother, he was a man of ability and an ambition to be somebody and the will to carry it out by making the best use of his opportunities. He was fine and wholesome. He inspired respect by his very hearing. The wife and child, and brothers and sisters have the heartfelt sympathy of everyone in this community in their great loss. The funeral took place yesterday (Tuesday) at Humboldt, Iowa.
