Funeral services for well known retired Humboldt lawyer, Franklin Jaqua, 88, were held Saturday, April 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Humboldt, with entombment in the Rossing - Jaqua family mausoleum in Union Cemetery. He died Thursday, April 7, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. The Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt was in charge of the arrangements, with Monsignor Louis Kollasch officiating. Casketbearers were Delmar DeSmidt, Jerry Howard,Robert Lee, Clark Lane, Marc Arends, and Larry Gentry. Honorary casketbearers were John Campbell, Richard Gentry and Dr. P.W. Williams.
Survivors include two sons, John of Humboldt and Richard of Sioux Falls, SD; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther in November, 1986; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Ruth Mitchell.
Franklin Jaqua, son of Frank and Alice (McCaffrey) Jaqua, was born Aug. 8, 1899, in Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1917. He served in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant during World War I. After receiving his LLB degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1924, he practiced law in Humboldt for 58 years. In 1982 he retired from practice in the Jaqua and Mansfield Law Firm.
On Oct. 4, 1931, he was united in marriage to Esther Rossing at Sioux City and they resided all their married life in Humboldt. Jaqua served as a former Commander of Adams American Legion Post No. 119; former president of the Humboldt Rotary Club; member of the Humboldt County Bar Association, District Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association and American Bar Association; and served many years as a member of the Humboldt County Soldiers Relief Commission and the Humboldt Planning Commission. He served as Humboldt County Attorney and City Attorney for a time, Government Appeal Agent for the Humboldt County Draft Board, Relief Administrator for Humboldt County during the 1930s, chairman of the Humboldt County Rationing Board during World War II, and had served as president of the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce. Jaqua was vice president and director of the Humboldt Trust and Savings Bank until his retirement; was a former part-owner of the Humboldt Republican and Humboldt Independent and Wright County Monitor.
