June 2, 1884 --- October 20, 1919

Mrs. Ellis Martin

Lorenda Mary Irish was born June 2nd, 1824 near Moira, New York and passed away at the home of her daughter in Boone Township, October 20th 1919, at the age of ninety-five years, four months and eighteen days. She was the eldest of a family of ten children. At the age of eighteen she was married to Ellis Martin, They were the parents of seven children: Mrs. M. H. Cark of Westerville, Ohio, Mrs. E. H. Pringle of Clermont Iowa, Mrs. H. W. Brink of LuVerne, Iowa; Leonard and Eridora, who passed away in early childhood, Mrs. S. I. Gillespie of Boone Township, and E. J. Martin of Renwick.

In 1855 this family came to Fayette County, Iowa, where they remained eleven years, then coming to Vernon, Humboldt County, where they endured all the hardships incident to pioneer life. In 1882 they left the farm and settled in Renwick which was just starting. Here they built and operated a boarding house for several years. Later they bought and conducted a hotel on main street until advancing age compelled them to give up active life. Since the death of her husband twenty years ago. Mrs. Martin has made her home in Renwick and cared for herself and managed her own affairs until 2-1/2 years ago when as the result of a fall she has been unable to walk and has been cared for by her children since. In early life she was baptized and became a member of the Methodist Church. Altho she suffered severely at times she was never known to question her Father's mercy, but patiently waited the summons to come up higher. She had a wonderful bright and active mind for one of her age, and always took an interest in the affairs of the day and of her children.

A good woman, a good mother has gone. She left to mourn her five children, four grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and several brothers and one sister. Services were conducted by Rev. Nicholson of Goldfield who spoke many comforting words to the friends. A male quartet consisting of Messers. Figi, Schlesselman, Pride and Richardson furnished beautiful music. E. R. Green of Renwick conducted the funeral in a kind and courteous manner.

Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Those from away attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Brink and Mrs. W. F. Godfrey of LuVerne, Mrs. Charles Johnson of Kanawha, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, Mrs. C. O. Lewis and Mr. Dolph Bjornson of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. N. M. Loobey and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bjornson of Goldfield.
