J. Loyd Kaufman, 92, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011, around 8AM, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, IA. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 1111 5th Avenue North, Fort Dodge, at 11 AM on Friday, February 4th.

Loyd was born March 15, 1918, on the family farm in Colfax Township, Webster County. He was the son of John F. Kaufman and Emma Gummey Kaufman. Loyd attended country school, Colfax #3, a one-room country school house, and, in what was unusual for farm boys at the time, went on and graduated from high school at Fort Dodge in 1936. Loyd enlisted in the army just prior to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and was among some of the first to be shipped to Pearl Harbor after the attack. After the war, Loyd worked as a truck driver for Brady Moving and Storage of Fort Dodge, and later took over the operation of the family farm. He married Mary Jean Luhmann in 1947, and with her had 4 children, Gary, Kirk, Monte, and Ann. Loyd was predeceased by his parents; his brother Ernie Kaufman, and his sister Evelyn Kaufman Zenor; his wife, Mary; and his grandchild Baron Von Kaufman. He is survived by his children; his nieces, Nancy Zenor and Betty Zenor Pannick; his two grandchildren, Kersten Kaufman and Matt Kaufman; and his great grandchild, Samuel Henry Kaufman.

A special "thank you" goes to the wonderful caring staff and nurses at Friendship Haven's Tompkins Health Center and Trinity Hospice. Any memorial contributions received will be donated to local Honor Flights that are taking WWII veterans to Washington, DC, to see the World War II Memorial built in their honor. Preparation of services is being handled by the Gunderson Funeral Home.
