Gertrude Bertha Hannah Olson, the daughter of Charles and Louise (Schmidt) Peter, was born September 20, 1916, in rural Boone County, Iowa. She attended country school in the area of her birth and later moved to Algona with her family.

On March 22, 1942, Gertrude was united in marriage with Johan C. Olson in Algona. The couple lived on the Olson family farm east of Thor and to this union four children were born: Mary, John, Dennis and Marcia. Johan preceded her in death on July 28, 1984. Gertrude was an active member of Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Sons Of Norway and involved in many community activities.

Gertrude passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at the age of 96 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her children: Mary Anderson (Larry) of Eagle Grove and their son, Mark (Connie Brock); John Olson (Helen) of Ames and their children, Michael (Jenny), Jennifer (Hajo Holst) and Matthew (Kate); Dennis Olson (Jane) of Ames and their son Jonathan (Andrea) and Marcia Thomas (David) of Arlington, TX and their children, Sara and Scott; seven great-grandchildren: Ashlynn, Alec, Kjersten, Parker, Amalia, Edison and Anna Gertrude.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with Rev. Timothy Larson officiating. Burial will be in East Ullensvang Cemetery near Thor. Memorials may be directed to Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Thor.
