Robert James Lester, 91, of Las Vegas, passed away June 29, 2013. He was born in Goodell, Iowa, the son of William and Olga Lester. He attended a rural school in Lincoln Township, Iowa, graduated from Clarion High School, and attended Los Angeles City College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Sept. 1, 1956, he was united in marriage to Margaret Whitman. All who knew Robert recall his friendly personality, his upbeat outlook on life, and his sense of humor. He was a member and an officer of the Las Vegas Prime Timers. He was a Scrabble enthusiast and also sometimes enjoyed going to casinos. He was an active church member. He sang in the church choir at several of the churches he belonged to and served on several church Evangelism committees. Most recently, he was a member of Desert Spring Methodist Church, where for many years he wrote a monthly article on evangelism for the church newsletter. He frequently performed in the Las Vegas Passion Play. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and brother-in-law, Thomas Haener. He is survived by his son, Richard; sister, Marjorie Haener; brother-in-law, Robert Whitman and wife, Margie; and brother-in-law, William Whitman and wife, Charlotte. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Desert Spring Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to Desert Spring Methodist Church.
