Paul Curtis Stein, age 61, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the home of his son's and daughter-in-law's in Eagle Grove following a courageous 20-month battle with cancer. A Funeral Liturgy celebrating Paul's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 28, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid. A private family committal service will take place at St. John's Cemetery in Gilmore City, Iowa.

Paul was born on August 19, 1951, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, one of eight children to Curtis Paul and Betty Margaret (Huseby) Stein. He was raised on a farm near Gilmore City. Paul was a 1969 graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Pocahontas, IA. He was also a 1973 graduate of University of Northern Iowa, where Paul earned an Accounting Degree. On June 18, 1971, he was married to Dianna Lonning. This union blessed them with three children, one daughter and two sons. They later divorced. Paul enjoyed an active life with friends and family. For 37 years, he worked with UPS as a driver, retiring in 2011. The majority of his routes covered the Madrid and Woodward areas. Paul had lived in the Luther area for 11 years prior to moving to an acreage outside of Ellsworth, for his remaining 26 years. He was a loyal and faithful Iowa State Cyclones fan. Paul enjoyed Stock-car racing, helping his grandson with Go-Kart racing and snowmobiling. He was a gifted mechanic and could literally fix any kind of small engine or motor. Paul loved spending time with his family and friends; he will greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Brian (Heather) Stein of Eagle Grove, IA, Shelly (Matthew) Dwyer of Greenville, NC and Sean Horton of Medford, OR; parents, Curtis and Betty Stein of Gilmore City; four brothers, Rick (Lori) Stein of Dakota City, IA, Doug (Vicki) Stein of Wellman, IA, Ron (Esther) Stein of Woolstock, IA and Terry Stein of Gilmore City; two sisters, Cindy (Dave) Vote of Gilmore City and Suzanne Jergens of Humboldt, IA; seven grandchildren, Justin, Kristin, Alex, Cohlman, Aidan, Graham and Jordyn; and a host of many extended family members including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Paul was preceded into eternal life by one brother, Jim; and one infant son, Joey.
