August 30, 1891 --- August 19, 1963

Bert Emil Nelson was born at Eagle Grove, Iowa, on August 30, 1891, one of the twelve children of Halvor and Julia (Larson) Nelson. When he was about seven years old, the family moved to the Canby area where they settled in Providence Township, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota. Later they moved near Canby and then on to the Madison community where Bert was confirmed at the Garfield Church, and where his parents are at rest.

On September 15, 1920, Bert was united in marriage to Mathilda Natvig. The young couple farmed in the Canby vicinity eight or nine years before moving to Hanley Falls and then the Hazel Run communities. Mr. Nelson served his country in military service during World War I. He was a carpenter by trade and made three trips on the Alcan Highway to Alaska where he worked. It was while on this work that he lost one of his lungs by freezing. He continued his trade as a hobby during his later years.

The Nelsons have three children: Madlyn (Mrs. John Zak) of Buffalo, New York, Evelyn (Mrs. Herbert Christensen) of Clarkfield, and Dorothy (Mrs. Odell Swang) of Clarkfield. Grandchildren include Mary Jane, Donald, Barbara and Tommy Zak, Robert and Patricia Christensen and Diane, Janet, Cindy and Michael Swang.

Mr. Nelson passed away Monday, August 19, 1963, just eleven days before his 72nd birthday, at the Veterans Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, Mr. Nelson is survived by the following brothers and sister: Sadie (Mrs. Chris Hanson) of Canby, Christine (Mrs. William Grube) of Marietta, Mabel (Mrs. Victor Thompson) of Seattle, Washington, Lilly (Mrs. William Kirchburg) of Minneapolis, Sanford Nelson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Willie, Norman and Eddie of Canby and Joe of Minneapolis. Besides his parents, Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by an infant son, Russell Ellsworth; one brother, Henry, who drowned in a flash flood; and one sister, Annie (Mrs. Martin Hanson) who passed away the previous winter at Canby.
