Hannah (Korslund) Lund

The following is the obituary supplied by the Lund family: The death of Mrs. Samson J. Lund occurred at the Oscar Miller home in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, Saturday morning, February 1, 1958.

She had been slowly declining in health the last weeks, so it was with mingled feeling of sorrow and joy that her many relatives and friends learned that she had peacefully passed away--she longed to be with Christ. She had attained the age of ninety-two years, eight months and nine days.

Hannah Korsland Lund was born May 22, 1865, in Eidsvold, Norway, the daughter of Hans and Olja Korslund. She came to America with her family at the age of four years. They settled on a farm in southwest Wisconsin near the town of Dodgeville, where their place of worship, a little stone church, still stands. After five years of residence there, the family immigrated to Humboldt County, Iowa, by means of covered wagons and oxen. There they purchased a farm, the old Korslund place, three miles northeast from Thor, Iowa, where she grew up.

Rev. O.A. Saurer of Fort Dodge, Iowa, came over and conducted services in the old Center School house where she received her instruction and was confirmed by Rev. Saurer March 30, 1880, on Palm Sunday. Later she became a member of the Ladies Aid. In 1883 she was united in marriage to Samson J. Lund. The first year of their married life, they farmed after which they moved to Thor, Iowa. On March 9, 1901, she arrived in Clarkfield, Minnesota, together with her family and the John and Ova Olson families where each moved onto the farms purchased in Tyro Township, where she resided until her death. They joined the Clarkfield Lutheran Church; she was a charter member of the Tyro Ladies Aid. Since this aid consolidated with the Clarkfield Aid, she continued her membership and was a faithful member until her death.

Mr. and Mrs. Samson J. Lund had a family of eleven children; Mrs. Lund was devoted to her home, her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The children were instructed in the Christian faith. The home practiced the Christian grace of hospitality.

Her husband and three of the eleven children and three grandchildren preceded her in death, namely, Edwin, George, Oleva (Mrs. Payne) and a grandson, Allen, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lund who gave his life for his country in World War II; Erling Luther, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Haaland and Marlene Alvina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred West. The remaining children are: Joseph, Clarence, Hendrick, Mrs. Sarah Haaland, and Mrs. Oscar Miller of Clarkfield, Mrs. Julia Johnson of Chester, Iowa, Peder of Wausau, Wisconsin and Wilhelm of St. Peter, Minnesota. There are twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Together with her husband she was a loyal member of the local congregation and a regular attendant at the church worship. She had the spirit of patience, contentment and kindness. She trusted in the Lord to the end.
