Clarence Lars Lund was born March 7, 1894, in Thor, Iowa, one of a family of eleven children born to Samson J. and Hannah (Korsland) [sic Korslund] Lund. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on April 22, 1894, at Ullensvang Lutheran Church at Thor by Rev. O. C. Farseth. In 1901, he came to Minnesota with his parents, who settled on a farm in Tyro Township. He was confirmed by Rev. Storaasli on June 27, 1909. He attended school in District 85, later taking a course in agriculture and a year at the St. Paul Agriculture School. In August, 1918, he left for military service and while there became seriously ill and was hospitalized for several months. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to the Clarkfield community where he was employed by E.W. Bergren Motor Sales for a period of time. He then went to work for Standard Oil Company for about 15 years, three years of which were in the Hanley Falls area.
He served as village assessor for eight years and in 1949 became County Supervisor of Assessments of Yellow Medicine County, a position he held until his death. In 1921, Clarence was united in marriage to Alice Rexstad of Boyd by Rev. O.J. Erickson of Granite Falls. To this union, two children were born: Allen V. Lund, a member of a B17 Bomber Squadron, who was killed in action in 1944, and James Lund of Austin, Minnesota. Mr. Lund was a member of the Minnesota Association of Assessing officers and of Group No. VI of Assessing Officers of the eleven surrounding counties. He was a charter member of the J. Ben Johnson Post of the American Legion, having belonged to the organization for over 40 years. He was also active in other fraternal orders. He was a member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church since 1901 and together with his wife and children worshiped in that church.
Mr. Lund passed away on May 24, 1963, at the age of 69 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Edwin, George A. and Joseph; one sister, Oleva (Mrs. Otis Payne); and his son, Allen V. Lund.
