Mabel Irene Nelson, the daughter of Martin and Dagny (Anderson) Keen, was born October 6, 1918, on a farm in rural Humboldt County. She was raised and educated in Thor, Iowa. On April 23, 1938, Mabel was united in marriage with Wayne Nelson at the Thor Lutheran Parsonage. They farmed the family century farm all their married life of 64 years. Mabel was an active member of Ullensvang Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. Mabel belonged to many social clubs and organizations including Evergreen Sporting Association, D.O.C., Sons of Norway and various card clubs. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mabel passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion at the age of 94 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne Nelson in 2002; son, Philip Nelson in 2003; three brothers, Willie, Duane and Lloyd Keen; a sister, Bernice Reichter and sister-in-law, Mildred Keen. Survivors include her son, Lynn Nelson and his wife Gale of Albert Lea, MN; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Nelson of Independence, IA; four grandchildren, Peter Nelson of Thor, Paula McMaster of St. Louis, MO, Rundi Nelson Priebe and husband Dale of Brandon, IA and Jeff Nelson and wife Melissa of New Ulm, MN; seven great-granddaughters, Claire, Cecelia and Evelyn Priebe of Brandon, IA and Allie Rae and Josie Faith Nelson of New Ulm, MN and Gabriella and Isabella LeVine of St. Louis, MO; brother, Dick (Bev) Keen; sisters-in-law, Wanda Keen and Corrine Keen and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with Pastor Daryl Landsverk officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in East Ullensvang Cemetery near Thor.
