Dows Pioneer Goes To His Final Rest
Thomas L. Severe Succumbs Friday After Stroke

Dows IA - June 1 -- Thomas L. Severe, age 87, died last Friday evening in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Houck, having suffered a stroke the Tuesday before. He was born at Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio, August 9, 1851. He married Mrs. Joanna Shreves, December 31st 1871, having come to Iowa in 1869. Mrs. Severe died September 23rd, 1933. Mr. Severe came to this country when much of the region was a prairie and he spent much of his time herding cattle by the thousand over a radius of ten miles west of Dows. Most of the trading was done at Alden or Webster City. He and his father built the first bridge over the slough, to save driving so far to get to Dows. As a carpenter he built the first hotel, first school house and first printing shop in Clarion. The deceased is survived by six children: Mrs. Viola Brady, Jesse L. Severe, A. D. Severe, Manning Severe, Leon Severe, and Mrs. Naomi Houck all living in or near Dows.
