Paine Services Held Tuesday In Ree Heights

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the United Church of Christ at Ree Heights [South Dakota] for Roger H. Paine, long-time businessman and rancher, who died Oct 9 at Stuart, Fla. The Rev. Milo Sheldon conducted the services, with Speirs Lodge No. 186 AF & AM conducting graveside rites. Burial was at Morningside Cemetery. The casket-bearers were: Hoyt Nicholas, Jr., Roger Nicholas, Lynn Paine, Wayne Specker, Marlen McGee, and Danny Deuter, grandsons.

Roger H. Paine was born at Eagle Grove, Iowa, Sept. 8, 1885, the son of David D. and Orilla Paine. He received his education at Iowa State University. He was married to Bessie Kennedy at Goldfield, Iowa, March 24, 1908, residing on a farm in that area until 1918, when they located on a ranch in Ree Heights township. They moved to Ree Heights in 1920, where Mr. Paine was actively engaged in business until his retirement 12 years ago, operating the local telephone exchange for several years, followed by 26 years in the hardware and implement business, developing ranching interests on the side. He was on the organizational board of the Ree Electric Association at Miller, and was accorded the honor of throwing the switch that energized the first unit of rural electrification in the area.

Following retirement the couple have divided their time between a winter residence in Stuart, Fl., and their home at Ree Heights. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Speirs Masonic Lodge at Ree Heights, and El Riad Shrine at Sioux Falls.
