Phyllis L. Wassom, age 80, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Phyllis was born on February 20, 1924, in Corwith, IA, the daughter of Lawrence and Nona (Bomgardener) Beard. Phyllis graduated from Des Moines high school and continued her education at A.I.B. She lived in Des Moines and worked in a bank until her marriage on August 21, 1944, to Merritt E. Wassom in Williamsburg, VA. They moved to Sac City after Merritt was discharged from the service. To this union six children were born: Nona, Eugene, William, Mark, Mary, and Paula.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City and the Catholic Daughter's of America. Phyllis was a busy mother and housewife with six children to take care of. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, gardening, and cooking for her family, but she was most proud of her service to St. Mary's and her children.
Survivors include her sons: Eugene Wassom of Lake View, IA, William Wassom and wife Debby of Elkhorn, NE, and Mark Wassom of Arlington, TX; her daughters: Nona Johnson and husband Gary of Blue Springs, MO, Mary LaGrange and husband Ted of Lincoln, NE, Paula Schlotfeldt and husband Phil of Apple Valley, MN; twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and extended family members. Her parents; husband, Merritt on April 27, 1993; and brother, Ted Beard, preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Phyllis will be held Friday, July 23rd, 10:30 am, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City, with Father Larry McCarty officiating. Pallbearers include the following: Jessica Johnson, Jill LaGrange, Amber Wassom, Ben LaGrange, Jordan Wassom, and David Schlotfeldt. Honorary pallbearers include: Michelle Wassom, Andrew Wassom, Jennifer Stillwel, Jeremy Wassom, Melissa Burnett, and Katherine Schlotfeldt. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. Arrangements provided by the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City, Thursday, July 22, from 4:00-8:00 pm with family present from 6:00-8:00. Vigil services will be at 8:00 pm and the Catholic Daughters of American will have a rosary at 4:00 pm.
