November 19, 1883 --- September 22, 1958

Jesse Gray Strain, son of David Prestley and Liza T. Strain, was born Nov. 19, 1883 at Bedford.
He died at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames Tuesday morning Sept. 22. He spent his early days in Bedford and Clearfield attending the Clearfield school. In his early manhood he moved to Woolstock with his widowed mother, during which time he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. On April 12, 1912 he was united in marriage with Nellie May Middleton and to this union were born 9 children. They are Mrs. Arlo McGowan, Livermore; John Strain, Madison, Wis.; Allen, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Milton Helgesen, Madison, Wis.; Milton, San Francisco, Calif.; George, Kirkland, Wash.; Jean Thomas, Seattle, Wash.; Janet Claybough [Clabaugh], Stanhope; and Jack, Seattle, Wash. Besides fathering 9 children he is a grandfather to 34 grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers and one sister.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and the B. of L. F. & E. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Kastler Funeral Home with Rev Roy Cox officiating. Burial was made in the family lot at Troy Cemetery.

Jesse Strain Funeral Friday Afternoon
Funeral services for Jesse Strain 74, will be held Friday Afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Kastler Funeral Home. Rev. Roy Cox will officiate and interment will be in the family lot at Troy Cemetery, in Troy Township south of Eagle Grove. Mr. Strain died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in Mary Greeley hospital at Ames where he had been a patient since the night before. He had left here Monday evening to board a train for Iowa City to go to the University hospital and it was while waiting at Ames he had a severe stroke and was taken to the hospital. His son Allen Strain was immediately called and he spent the night with his father in the hospital. He is survived by nine children, Allen of Eagle Grove: George, Jack and Mrs. Ray Thomas of Seattle, Wash.: Mrs. Milton Helgeson and John Strain of Madison, Wis.: Mrs. Arlo McGowan of Livermore: Mrs. Richard Clabaugh of Stanhope: Milton Strain who lives in Oregon. Mr. Strain worked for the Chicago and North Western R.R. as an engineer and retired about 9 years ago.
