Winford D. Beer, a longtime Fort Dodge resident, died peacefully in his sleep on March 25, 2013. He is survived by his son Brad Beer, of Fort Dodge, his daughters Vanda Lendin, of Tarzana, CA, and Kristi Beer, of Houston, TX, and son and daughter-in-laws Yves Delepine, Nancy Gaffey and Densie Herrington, as well as four grandchildren: Bret Beer (Nancy), of Lincoln, NE, Beau Heggen (Rachel), of Venice Beach, CA, Staci Miller (Matt) of Fort Dodge, and Chloe Delepine, of Houston, TX, and five great-grandchildren: Bryce and Drew Beer, Tehya and Drake Miller and Vetiver Heggen, born on his birthday this year.

Winnie Beer was born on January 8, 1924, in Eagle Grove, IA, and graduated from Rutland High School in 1941. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, but his studies were interrupted by World War II, and he volunteered for the Air Force, where he became a flight instructor at the age of 19. After the war, he married Jean Marie Cook, of Fort Dodge, and played semi-professional baseball for the Fort Dodge Tobin Packers and worked for many years at Carnation. When his wife developed Alzheimer's disease, he cared for her in their home until her death in 2004. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
